Short answer
Vibe coding is an informal approach to building software by describing what you want to an AI tool and iterating on its output, often without closely reviewing the code. It can make experimentation easier. It does not establish that the resulting application is secure, reliable or maintainable.
How it differs from AI-assisted programming
A developer can use AI while still understanding the architecture, reviewing changes and testing behavior. Vibe coding generally places more trust in generated output and visible results. The boundary is fuzzy; the distinction is about the workflow, not whether an AI tool was involved.
A 2026 ICSE practitioner-literature review examined 101 sources and 518 behavioral accounts. It reported speed and accessibility alongside concerns about verification and maintainability. That is evidence about reported practice, not a controlled estimate of how often all AI-built applications fail.
What a working demo does not tell you
A booking form can look finished while missing access controls, rate limits, backups or a reliable email-delivery path. None of those omissions is unique to AI-generated software. Fast generation makes it easier to create more software before anyone asks who will operate it.
For a prototype, some shortcuts are reasonable. Before accepting payments or customer data, define the required behavior, review security boundaries, test failure cases and assign technical ownership.
Will it replace WordPress or PHP?
It may change the choice for some new projects. A custom application becomes more accessible when you can describe it rather than build every screen manually. That is a plausible direction, not proof that PHP’s installed base is disappearing.
Existing businesses also need content workflows, integrations and years of data. Replacing their CMS means replacing those capabilities, not just reproducing its homepage.
The useful question is not whether the app was prompted or typed. It is whether someone can explain it, change it and recover it when it breaks.
